What a koi pond really costs

Where the money goes, why the cheap version fails, and what we publish as a starting point.

We publish starting numbers because vagueness in this trade mostly serves the builder. Koi ponds start at $30,000 with us. That figure is not a sticker on a product. It's the point below which we can't build something that keeps koi healthy for decades and still looks like it belongs on the property.

Where the money actually goes

  • Excavation and spoils. Koi need real depth, and depth means volume of dirt that has to leave the site. Access constraints drive this line hard.
  • Filtration and plumbing. Sized for a heavy, well-fed fish load, not for a decorative pond. This is where cheap builds quietly cut.
  • Aeration. Non-negotiable, and the thing that saves a collection during a heat wave.
  • Liner, underlayment, and rockwork. The stone is both the finish and the biological surface area.
  • Labor. Every boulder is placed, looked at, and frequently re-placed. This is the majority of the craft and a large share of the cost.

Why the cheap koi pond is the expensive one

The most common rebuild we're called to is a shallow pond with pretty rockwork and filtration meant for a fraction of the fish it holds. It looks correct for one season. Then summer arrives, the shallow water heats, oxygen drops right as the biological load peaks, and the owner loses fish they had named.

Rebuilding that pond costs more than building it correctly would have, because now you're paying for demolition too.

The number nobody quotes you

Budget roughly 10% of the build cost per year for care. That covers the spring cleanout, seasonal service, water treatments, and the small equipment items that wear. A $40,000 pond that looks like $40,000 in year eight is a pond someone maintained.

How to get a real number for your property

Access, grade, soil, power, and the distance a boulder has to travel from the truck to its final resting place move the price more than square footage does. That's what the design consultation is for, and its fee is credited in full against the project.
